Making picture frames with a router table. The first frame can be made with a single picture and mirror frame making router bit item 56 517. The mock up helps set up the cove bit in the router table to form the mahogany molding. Once you cut it out it should look like a round molding piece for your new frame. A mock up of the main piece of molding for the classic picture frame was made from mdf.
After you ve made two round edges head over to the table saw and cut the board to an about a quarter of an inch of thickness. The most important part is getting the height of the bit exactly right. Milling the classic frame. Some might make the picture frame from yellow poplar and paint it.
The frame is made on a router table using a rabbet bit. In a single pass you can produce the profile and then run over the back with the stepped rabbet router bit item 35 857 to create the rabbet on the back. Then cut the outer frame to fit. I used acrylic instead of glass as its cheaper and easier to cut.
Note the orientation of the stock. This picture frame is a great example of how versatile routers can be. Make sure to repeat the step at least twice so that you can eliminate any leftover debris on the wooden plank. Make the inner frame first cutting the usual 3 8 in.
Rabbet photo 1 and then routing the profile on the face photo 2. Then machine the outside frame photos 3 through 6.
